Photographer Simon Mitchell killed & one hurt after runaway bike crashed into barrier at British Mot

A PHOTOGRAPHER was tragically killed after being hit by a runaway bike which crashed into a barrier at the British Motocross Championships yesterday.

Simon Mitchell, who was in his 50s, died as he took snaps of the race at Foxhill track near Swindon, Wilts.

Tragedy struck on Sunday around 3pm when a rider came off his bike during a jump.

The bike then smashed through a barrier made of hay bales and hit Simon.

The snapper's heartbroken family have since paid tribute to him and told of their devastation.

Sister Nikki Dancey said: "My family and I are deeply saddened to share the dreadful news that our brother, son and uncle tragically lost his life yesterday in a freak accident at the Foxhill motocross event in Swindon, despite the best efforts of paramedics and air ambulance doctors.

"We are utterly devastated. Rest in Peace Simon Mitchell."

People who knew Simon described him as "amazingly talented" and a "genuinely lovely guy".

Sam Mowat said: "RIP Simon. Not just a lovely man but an amazingly talented photographer.

"His work will live on. Sending love."

The racetrack also paid tribute to Simon and his work.

In a Facebook post they said: "The entire team at VMXdN Foxhill is deeply saddened by the passing of Simon Mitchell.

"Simon was a brilliant photographer, a huge motocross enthusiast, and an incredible supporter of VMXdN Foxhill from day one.

"Simon worked closely with the VMXdN team for many years within our different roles in the MX industry.

"Over the years, he has captured many memories that will be forever cherished. Many of Simon’s photographs are displayed across our social pages and website.

"His photograph was the original image behind last year’s Mike Brown Merch T-shirt, which he was incredibly proud of.

"Simon was a genuinely lovely guy who always had time and wanted to help others.

"We know he will be so sadly missed by the whole VMXdN Team and the motocross community.

"Our thoughts and condolences go to his family and friends at this very sad time."

A marshal, in his 60s, was also injured in the horror collision.

It is understood both men were behind a specific marshal point and not with spectators.

The event, which was organised by Langrish MCC, was stopped immediately.

A spokesperson for the events company said: “RHL Activities are saddened to announce that this weekend’s meeting at Foxhill in Wiltshire has been cancelled.

"At this moment in time we ask that everyone bears with us and any further updates will be made if required.”

The rider was not hurt in the crash.

Wiltshire Police said: “At around 2.50pm yesterday (14/05), we responded to an incident at Foxhill Motocross in Swindon involving a rider and two members of the public during a race.

“The rider was dismounted following a jump and the unmanned bike has left the track, sadly killing a man in his 50s.

"His next of kin have been informed and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this time.

“A second man, aged in his 60s, has been taken to hospital with a serious injury.”

Around 10,000 people attended the event over the weekend before it was abandoned.

The 1.5 mile long track is known for having a challenging terrain and steep hills.
